The Consequence of Not Calibrating (3)

Sounds Bad, Man
Because of erroneous measurements made by a broadcast consultant, an American FM radio station's composite modulation depth was wrongly set such that the modulation peaks were +/-150kHz. This was "200% modulation" as defined by the US Federal Communications Commission -- twice the legal limit and likely to attract a large fine because of co-channel interference. Investigators discovered that the consultant had "self-calibrated" his modulation meter. Cartoon : Poor transmitter set-up
Transmitters can be tricky to set-up so that they don't attract the wrong kind of attention !
Frying Tonight
Cartoon : Damaged equipment

A manufacturer of DC power supply units (PSU) used a voltmeter and shunts to measure load currents of its prototypes. The meter was calibrated regularly but the shunts were not -- the reason (wrongly) being that "they're passive so they don't need it". One shunt got "cooked" through misuse, increasing its resistance. This meant the PSU delivered lower power than assumed and results of thermal tests were over-optimistic. When the error was finally found, it took months to requalify a series of PSUs before they could actually be put into production.

Let Us Know !

We'd be delighted to publish more stories where the lack of, or inadequate, calibration has had a defined commercial or safety impact. You'll get a small prize if your story is used and don't worry, we promise to remove all specific details to save further embarrassment to the guilty party !

But Remember...

Regular calibration will not eliminate risk, but a well managed calibration system can reduce it to a level you can accept. And by the way, the possibility of inadequate calibration isn't the only consideration....
